The story of the widow putting her last two coins in the offering has often been taken to mean that we – like her – should “give until it hurts”. But we need to read this story as an example of what Jesus said when asked about paying tax: “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Each of us have been created in the image of God, and we owe everything we have and are to God. The widow was doing exactly that. She entrusted herself – not just the coins – to the mercy and compassion of God.

Listen to the sermon preached by the Revd Bryce Amner on Sunday 11 November 2018.

The scripture readings are Mark 12:13–17, 38–44 and Genesis 1:1–2:3.
