The story of Lazarus is the turning point in John’s gospel. In the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke), the turning point comes when Peter confesses that Jesus is “the Messiah, the Son of God”, and Jesus responds by predicting his death and resurrection. In John’s gospel, Jesus doesn’t predict his death and resurrection – he acts it out, by raising his friend Lazarus from the tomb. But it isn’t Peter who confesses who Jesus is – it’s Martha.
Listen to the sermon preached by the Revd Bryce Amner on Sunday 4 November 2018.
The scripture reading is John 11:1–6; 17–45.
